Chapter 12: Genesis

Damian opened his eyes, unsure if he was able to get the emerald out and stop the bomb as he planned.  His eyes fixed on the timer.  0.1 seconds.  “It worked!” he cried.  “I actually stopped the bomb.  Rocco, I stopped the…..” he turned to tell his friends that they were no longer in any danger.  But for some reason, Rocco and Alexis were standing motionless, arms reaching out for him.  “Guys, what are you doing?” he asked.  He could hear his voice echo loudly.  Damian jumped off the robot and approached his friends.  No matter what he did, they didn’t move.  Suddenly, Damian felt a surge of energy from his hand.  He saw the green Chaos Emerald glow in his hand, pulsing at the same rate as his heart.  “What’s going on?” he asked himself.  “Is this……….. Chaos Control?”  His attention turned back to his motionless friends.  He placed his hands on their shoulders.  The emerald began to pulse faster, as did his heart.  The pulses then became one continuous glow that revealed the entire world before him.  Damian was nearly sure that he was right, and that him pulling the emerald out of the robot may not have stopped the bomb.  He closed his eyes and recalled all the places he’s been before.  He remembered the shuttle loop from earlier.  ‘If this is really Chaos Control,’ Damian thought.  ‘That’s where I want to go.’  Damian felt energy build up in his body.  ‘Here goes something.’ “Chaos……. CONTROL!”  Damian felt his body and his friends’ getting lifted and pushed through the walls of the building, over the rolling green hills, and next to the shuttle loop.  The emerald’s glow ceased.

Ka- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Rocco and Alexis shook.  They realized they were no longer in the hangar.  They soon realized that they were right next to the shuttle loop.  And the Axel base right behind them, being blown to pieces.  “What just happened?” Alexis said.  Damian looked at the emerald in his hand.  A silly, elated grin came over him.  “I CAN DO CHAOS CONTROL!” he blissfully shouted, before passing out from exhaustion.  Seeing their friend collapse only added to Rocco and Alexis’ confusion.

Out to the west of the destroyed base, the surviving Axel troops headed for a nearby base.  General 21 contacted Boss 01 and Commander 02.  He was concerned with what would happen to him due to his failure.  The transmission went through and the two superiors appeared.  01 was a tall, stout man, who could intimidate any man with a single glare.  02 was a masked, teenage girl half his size.  Nevertheless, she commanded respect and fought better than everyone in the entire corporation.  “This had better be important.” 01 said.

“I’m afraid it’s bad news,” 21 reported.  “It’s with great distress that I announce the destruction of Sector 2.”  There is a long silence.  “To what cause?” 01 inquired.  21 was hesitant to answer.  “A group of teenagers who were after the chaos emerald.”  In the background, an uproar of laughter could be heard.  Shame overcame 21 until 02 spoke up.  “SILENCE!” she ordered.  The silence stopped instantly.  01 looked at the girl with the approval.  It was clear he was a higher rank than she was, but it was clear he held the upmost respect for her.  “Thank you Commander,” 01 said.

“That laughter annoyed and insulted me,” she said.  She looked at all the men in the room, striking fear into them.  “I see no reason why this is a matter of laughter.  I myself am merely 15, and hold one of the highest ranks.  So I don’t want to hear it.  Besides,” she turned back to 21.  “I know of the teenagers you are talking about.  They are a skilled group.  I know them.  Or at least one in particular…..” 02 turned away.  No one could tell what she was thinking.  01 took over the conversation.  “I suppose they managed to take the emerald you had.”

“I’m not very sure they could have,” 21 responded, having a feeling of relief.  “There was no way they could have survived the explosion.”

“What?” 02 asked, turning her attention back at 21.  “What explosion?”

“We set up the Phantom prototype you sent up to defend the emerald.  They clearly managed to defeat it, because I have no doubt that the explosion was Phantom’s self-destruct mechanism.”

“Well,” 01 said.  “I suppose that now that it’s been taken care off……”

“General!” a soldier cried in the distance.  He came running from the north.

“Where did you come from?” 21 asked.  He didn’t know that there were any other survivors save the ones that were with him.  The soldier stopped in front of the general, taking deep breaths.  “I was repairing turret 4 when I saw the base explode.  Then I turned and I saw the teenagers standing next to the shuttle loop with our chaos emerald.”

“WHAT?!” 21 shouted in shock.  “But…… how is that……they couldn’t have………”

“Well,” 01 said.  “I see you failed to stop them.”

“I swear sir,” 21 started.  “I had done everything in my power….”

“Not enough!” 01 growled, slamming his hands on the table.  “02 is right about the facts of teenagers, so I will suppose you were up to some formidable opponents.  But you failed to defeat them and that cost us two chaos emeralds.  Now tell me:  What will you do about it.”

21 was stunned.  On top of his failure, he had also realized the explosion must have taken 22 with it.  Besides being a great partner, 22 was a friend of his from long before.  Rage overcame the general.  “I’m taking my men to Sector 3.  If these teenagers plan to attack there, they’ll need all the hands they can get.”

“Then get to it.” 02 replied.  The transmission ended.  21 looked back at the destroyed base.  “This is yet to be over.  I’ll finish those teens if it’s the last thing I do.”

“I don’t believe it!” Rocco exclaimed.  “You can do Chaos Control Damian?!  Unreal!”

“I know it’s awesome,” Damian responded.  “But what about your little stunt huh; taking your sword and jamming it on the thrusters of that machine?  That was epic!”

“Hey,” Rocco said turning to Alexis.  “If it weren’t for Alexis, I couldn’t have done it at all.”  Alexis blushed while a smile came over face.  “Aww, it was nothing.”  They pulled out both of their acquired Chaos Emeralds.  They shone with a brilliant light.  “I can barely believe it guys,” Alexis said.  “We’re really becoming heroes.”

Rocco remembered what happened back at school while in detention and chuckled.  “Just like the janitor said.”

“Huh?” Damian said.  “What do you mean?”

“Well,” Rocco recalled.  “When I was in detention, the janitor talked to me.  He told me that there would be a new genesis for heroes soon.  I’m guessing he meant us.”

“Wow,” Damian said.  “Who would have guessed?”

“Genesis,” Alexis said.  “That’d be nice for a team name.”

“Eh?” the two guys said.

“Just hear it……. Team Genesis.”

“Team…….. Genesis?” Rocco repeated.  There was a small pause before Rocco accepted the name.  “That’s exactly what we are.  The team of a new beginning.”

“Plus it’s got a good ring to it,” Damian commented.

“So it’s settled?” Alexis asked, putting one hand out.

“You bet,” Damian responded, putting his hand on top.  Rocco followed up putting in his hand as well.  “This is our time.  Together, we can’t be beat.”

The sun set on the newly formed team.  But they knew for a fact that this was just the beginning.
