Chapter 10: Breaking In

Generals 22 and 21 rounded up the troops to prepare for the impending fight.  While 22 prepared the troops for outer defense, 21 stationed troops who would stay inside the base and guard key locations.  Once the troops set off, 22 and 21 reunited in their office.  22 lit a cigar while 21 re-checked the report on X04S Phantom when it was being tested.  “It’s crazy,” 22 commented.  “We’re defending ourselves from three people with hundred’s of troops.  Defending it from teenager’s moreover.”
“In any other circumstance, I’d agree,” 21 responded.  “But after what happened at Moonlake, we should keep from lowering our defenses.”
“I just don’t get how we couldn’t finish the job.  Moonlake’s Chaos Emerald seemed to be the easiest catch.”
21 turned towards 22.  “It was.  We didn’t, however, account for the possible use of the emerald’s power.”
“Meaning?”
21 took out a pocket size computer and turned it on.  “Over the news, the Moonlake incident was reported.  There was a person who had video taped the whole thing.”  He handed the computer to 22.  The video showed the teens they were defending themselves from, swiftly breaking through soldiers, destroying the water tower, and avoiding the flood.  But what caught 22’s attention the most was the incredible blazing whirlwind they created that wiped out all the troops.  “Im….. Impossible,” 22 stuttered.  He put the computer on the desk.  “Now I see.  These kids actually have powers.”  21 nodded.  “And if we aren’t prepared, they may well be the biggest threat Axel will have.”

Outside, the gang raced through Green Hill Zone searching for the Axel base.  Several squadrons have appeared, but they were defeated one by one.  Nevertheless, the gang was starting to tire out.  “Man,” Damian breathed.  “There’s so many of them.”
“They must really want that emerald,” Alexis commented, taking rest on a rock.  “And they only come faster each time.”
“That means we’re close,” Rocco responded, taking a sip of water.  “If we wait here, we can easily get overwhelmed.  We should press on.”  Rocco took off, Damian and Alexis following behind.  Another squadron appeared forming a long barrier.  Still on the move, Rocco started to come up with a strategy to break their defense.  “Damian,” he called, reaching his hand toward the chameleon.  Damian wasn’t sure what Rocco was planning, but grabbed his hand and trusted he knew what he was doing.  Once they got close, Rocco used all his strength to lob Damian toward the barrier.  Damian, realizing what the plan was, curled into a ball, minimizing his impact and maximizing the impact on the barrier.  Damian pushed through the barrier and ran, leaving Rocco and Alexis to go through the gap he left.  Soon enough, the three arrived at the edge of the base, quickly hiding behind a rock to not get detected.  Rocco scanned the location.  There were machine guns mounted just about everywhere.  “Okay,” he started.  “How do we get through these guys without letting them turn us into Swiss cheese?”
“Simple,” Damian answered with a smirk on his face.  “Take out the guns.”
Rocco gave him a sarcastic look.  “Okay genius.  How are we going take those guns out?  We don’t have anything that could work.”
“Sure we do.  You’re looking at him.  Or at least……” Damian quickly turned invisible.  “…..you were.”  The chameleon took off for the base at high speed.  Although the Axel troops could hear something, they couldn’t see their target standing right in front of them.  Damian knocked out every single troop in the area before phasing back and signaling his pals.  Rocco then proceeded in grabbing one of the mounted machine guns and lifting it up.  “Whoa!” Alexis exclaimed.  “That’s some strength.”
“Rocco, do you even know how to work a machine gun?” Damian questioned.
Rocco shook his head.  “All I know is that they’re harder than a chameleon.”  He pulled the machine gun back and lobbed it through the building’s steel walls, knocking over many surprised solders in its way.  Rocco followed through jumping through the gap, pulling out his katana, and released a few fire waves to take care of any other soldier still standing.  Damian and Alexis came in to help, only to realize Rocco had it already taken care of.  “Damn Rocco,” Damian commented.  “You sure don’t waste a moment, don’t ya?”
“As if I had any moment to waste.” Rocco responded.  But they had no time to celebrate just yet.  Several footsteps echoed in the passageways.  The gang knew that they were going to be ambushed.  Rocco’s crimson blade began to glow with intense heat.  “Ready guys?” Rocco asked, with a smirk on his face.  “Ready!” Damian and Alexis responded in unison.  Without another word, Damian began to make a tornado while Alexis countered the winds from above.  The soldiers arrived from all corners, stunned to see a tornado within their base.  “What are you waiting for?” one of the soldiers cried.  “FIRE!”  All the soldiers started to shoot at the teens in the tornado, but the bullets couldn’t go through the strong winds.  Rocco prepared his swing.  “Let’s do it; FLAME CYCLONE!” With one swing, a fire surrounded and expanded the tornado’s winds, wiping out all of the nearby soldiers.  Damian came to a complete stop while Alexis landed dizzily next to Rocco.  Rocco caught her before she could fall.  “Guess I still need to get used to it.” Alexis joked.
“You did great anyway,” Rocco responded.  A pleased grin came over Alexis’ face.  Rocco turned his attention to Damian.  “You too man.”
Damian gave him the thumbs up.  “Now let’s go get what we came for.”

Back at the generals’ office, 22 and 21 saw the events via security camera.  “It’s almost surreal,” 21 said.  “So many men lost so quickly.  It’s like they never stood a chance.”
“I have to tell you,” 22 started.  “I’m actually starting to worry now.  I honestly didn’t count on this.  These kids……… they’re really something else.”
“If our troops can’t defeat these adolescents, then that means that our only hope lies with Phantom.”
“You sure that bucket of bolts can finish the job then?”
“It’d better.  For all our sakes.”
